Christiaan Karel Appel (pronounced [ˈkrɪstijaːn ˈkaːrəl ˈɑpəl]; 25 April 1921 - 3 May 2006) was a Dutch painter, sculptor, and poet.He started painting at the age of fourteen and studied at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam in the 1940s. He was one of the founders of the avant-garde movement CoBrA in 1948.

Karel Appel was a Dutch artist best known as one of the founding members of the avant-garde CoBrA group after World War II. 'I don't paint, I hit', he said of his bold expressive style. Appel was born in Amsterdam in 1921. The son of a barber, he received a scholarship to study at the city's Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten.

Internationally, Karel Appel (1921-2006) is perhaps the most renowned Dutch artist of the latter half of the twentieth century. In 2016 it will be ten years since his death: time for a new generation of visitors to look afresh at an oeuvre that many people still associate with Cobra and the 1950s, although it actually extends over a period of more than sixty years.

Karel Appel was born on April 25, 1921, in Amsterdam. From 1940 to 1943 he studied at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. In 1946 his first solo show was held at Het Beerenhuis in Groningen, the Netherlands, and he participated in the Jonge Schilders exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum of Amsterdam. In around this time, Appel was influenced first by Pablo Picasso and Henri.
